Torque Adapter Calculator

Get the correct torque wrench setting when using an extension or adapter. Enter your values — results are instant.

Enter Your Measurements

When using a torque adapter or extension, the added length changes the effective lever arm. Enter your measurements below to get the correct wrench setting.

Enter what you set the wrench to — we’ll calculate the actual torque at the fastener.

ft-lbs

Do You Need to Adjust?

No Adjustment Needed

  • Straight socket extensions — add length along the drive axis only. Zero effect on torque.
  • Drive adapters (3/8″→1/2″) — same principle, lever arm unchanged.
  • Torque sticks — preset torque built in. Select the right stick and go.

Adjustment Required

  • Torque adapters — any adapter that offsets the fastener farther from your hand extends the lever arm. Use the calculator above.
  • Extension bars used as adapters — when attached at an angle or offset, not inline.
  • Never use a U-joint — introduces unpredictable torque loss with no reliable formula to correct it.

The Formula

TS
Torque wrench setting — what you dial in
TA
Torque applied — what you want at the fastener
L
Wrench length — center of handle to center of drive
A
Adapter length — center of drive to center of fastener

The adapter increases the lever arm, so the same hand force produces more torque. You set the wrench lower than your target to compensate.

Step-by-Step Example

The Setup

You need to torque a fastener to 100 ft-lbs but there isn’t enough clearance for your wrench head. You attach a 3″ torque adapter to extend your reach.

  • TA Desired torque: 100 ft-lbs
  • L Wrench length: 18 inches
  • A Adapter length: 3 inches

The Calculation

  1. Plug into the formula:
    TS = 100 × 18 ⁄ (18 + 3)
  2. Add the denominator:
    TS = 100 × 18 ⁄ 21
  3. Divide:
    TS = 100 × 0.857
  4. TS = 85.7 ft-lbs
Set your torque wrench to 85.7 ft-lbs.
With the 3″ adapter, it will deliver exactly 100 ft-lbs at the fastener.

💡 Tip: enter these numbers in the calculator above to verify — you’ll get the same result instantly.

2 Common Mistakes

1

“My socket extension changes the torque reading”

It doesn’t. A straight extension runs along the drive axis — it doesn’t shift the fastener farther from your hand. Grab your extension and torque away, no math needed.

2

Using a U-joint or swivel with a torque wrench

Don’t. Universal joints introduce 10–15% torque loss at small angles and more at larger angles — with no reliable formula to correct for it. Use a proper offset adapter instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a socket extension affect my torque wrench?

No. A straight socket extension adds length along the drive axis only — zero effect on torque. Only adapters that shift the fastener farther from your hand change the lever arm and require a correction.

How do I measure my torque wrench length?

Measure from the center of the handle grip to the center of the square drive head, in a straight line. For a click-type wrench, set it to your target torque first so the handle isn’t extended.

Does it matter if I use inches or mm?

No — use either, just be consistent for both L and A. The formula uses a ratio so the units cancel out. The torque unit is passed through unchanged.

Can I use a drive size adapter (3/8″ to 1/2″) with a torque wrench?

Yes, no correction needed. Drive adapters change the square drive size but don’t shift the fastener farther from your hand — the lever arm stays the same.

What are torque sticks / torque limiting extension bars?

A completely different tool. Torque sticks are sprung-steel bars for use with impact wrenches — each one is calibrated to a specific torque value and limits the output automatically. No calculation needed; just select the right torque stick for the job. Always verify final torque with a calibrated torque wrench.
